He had a family to take care of, which included son Christopher (right), shown here with Myers in 1999. 5 Full-Time Writer After Myers decided that he would try to be a full-time writer, he knew that he needed to treat it like a full-time job. To be a full-time writer, he would need to write, of course. He would also need to work out ideas, outline books, and conduct research. Myers figured out a schedule.

He did not do well in his classes. He passed French, but failed English. During this time, he also began working with a therapist for his speech impediment. He heard about someone with a stutter who had finally lost it by speaking in a different accent. Myers tried this, and it worked. He especially liked talking with a Southern accent. This technique, plus the speech therapy, helped Myers to overcome his speech problem. A Children’s Story Myers kept writing at night, the only time he didn’t have to be at work and wasn’t busy with his children.
