It was a dynastic emblem used by the ruling princes of Kiev from the late tenth century, and this particular variant of it is a copy of the version used by Prince Vladimir, converter of the Rus to Christianity. 14 Hence in the next phase of development of this visual narrative (the 10,000-karbovanets note) the link is made explicit, as Lybed and her brethren are replaced by Vladimir himself, holding the Cross, alongside his own emblem. Having started with a bit of local colour, the series of banknotes thus turns by clear stages into a statement about the ancient roots of Ukrainian statehood, a declaration about the place of Ukraine in time.

They even included, at one extreme, the notion – propounded in the Philosophical Letters of Petr Chaadaev (1794–1856), published (in French) in 1836 – that Russia as yet had no proper history at all. But the characteristic, defining feature of the discourse lies not in any particular solution but in the preoccupation with the problem itself, in the specific dilemma of historical self-determination and the tensions generated thereby. 7 Though pushed out of the public domain for much of the twentieth century, the argument was revived in the late Soviet and post-Soviet era.

The eleventh-century polity was firmly based on Kiev because of its position on the north–south trade route, but by the second half of the twelfth century the rapidly proliferating members of the dynasty had significantly expanded their zones of activity, pushing outwards in both directions from the central axis and establishing strong regional centres as far apart as Vladimir in the northeast (beyond Moscow, which is first mentioned as a fortified outpost in 1147) and Galich in the southwest (in what is now Western Ukraine).
